Blue Grass Airport President & CEO Honored with Prestigious Recognition

February 10, 2025—Blue Grass Airport proudly announces that Eric J. Frankl, A.A.E., is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE). As the largest professional organization for airport employees, AAAE provides members with professional development and networking opportunities, cutting-edge training, comprehensive airport solutions and effective representation in Washington. The Distinguished Service Award (DSA) is one of AAAE’s highest honors, recognizing airport professionals with over 25 years of executive aviation service and at least 12 years as an accredited Airport Association Executive voting member. Recipients demonstrate outstanding professional and personal achievements, contribute to aviation organizations, serve AAAE and its regional chapters, and engage in civic affairs. DSA winners exemplify excellence in airport management, bringing lasting credit to the profession. “Eric is a shining example of all these qualities,” said Rick Crider, Chair of AAAE. “With a career spanning almost 40 years, including 15 years as President and CEO of Blue Grass Airport, Eric has consistently demonstrated leadership, innovation and an unwavering commitment to our industry and his community.”

Under Eric’s leadership, Blue Grass Airport has earned numerous accolades, including the National Air Transportation Association Airport Executive Partnership Award (2010), the Federal Aviation Administration Airport Mark of Distinction Award (2011) and the Best Places to Work in Kentucky Award (2018). Frankl has led efforts to set passenger records, enhance air service offerings, expand and modernize airport facilities, and elevate the customer experience for commercial and private aviation travelers.

“Eric Frankl’s visionary leadership has been instrumental to Blue Grass Airport’s growth and success,” said Brian Wells, Chair of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Airport Board. “His commitment to excellence and the customer experience has not only strengthened our airport but has also made a lasting impact on our community. We are proud to have him leading central Kentucky’s flagship airport into the future.”

Frankl’s influence extends well beyond Lexington. As a mentor, he has guided many airport professionals, helping them grow their careers and advance into leadership roles. His dedication to the airport industry is evident in his active involvement with AAAE, where he has served on the Board of Directors, led key committees—including the Leadership Development Committee—and contributed to industry advancements through his expertise and advocacy. Regionally, Frankl served as President of the Great Lakes Chapter in 2004 and was honored as Kentucky Airport Manager of the Year in both 2012 and 2016.
