April 3, 2019 – This week the Southeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) recognized Lexington's Blue Grass Airport with the General Aviation Architectural Project of the Year Award. This award acknowledges the airport for its excellence in designing new private aircraft hangars and a 12,000-square-foot community hangar—WestLEX General Aviation Services. WestLEX is specifically designed to provide support services to airport tenants leasing hangars on the west side of the airfield. This project was part of a $5 million investment by the Airport Board to support private aviation at Blue Grass Airport.

Conveniently located near the airport's general aviation runway, WestLEX provides hangar tenants with aircraft fueling services and towing assistance to/from individual hangars. Additional amenities include a large hangar for aircraft storage and maintenance as well as a comfortable lounge, conference room, vending machines, restrooms and flight planning area. This space is also occupied by multiple aviation businesses including NexGen Aviation (flight training) and Thoroughbred Aviation (aircraft maintenance).

"We are honored to be recognized by our industry peers for our advancements in offering unique services to our private aircraft owners," said Eric Frankl, executive director at Blue Grass Airport. "We worked closely with our private aviation users and service providers to create these award-winning facilities. We hope to continue building upon this achievement to create a welcoming environment for these important customers."

Architecturally, these new facilities adhere to an appealing style reflective of the region's equine barns. Designed by J.R. Miller & Associates and constructed by Long Construction, the WestLEX facility and nearby hangars incorporate a green and ivory color scheme selected to blend seamlessly into the aesthetics of iconic Keeneland Race Course, positioned directly across the street from the airport.

This award was granted by the Southeast Chapter of the American Association of Airport Executives, which consists of over 450 members from 12 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The association provides professional growth and educational programs for aviation professionals, fosters public recognition of airport management and represents airports before the appropriate governing bodies.

Located in Lexington, Kentucky, Blue Grass Airport is served by four major airlines providing non-stop and connecting service to hundreds of destinations worldwide. The airport serves more than 1.3 million passengers annually and supports our community with an economic output exceeding $370 million.
