April 25, 2019 – As Blue Grass Airport (LEX) continues to experience passenger records, the airport has initiated a parking expansion to provide customers with ample options and parking spaces. As part of a $5.8 million construction project, the airport's current 640 vehicle long-term parking lot will soon be enlarged to accommodate more than 985 vehicles, and the airport's cell phone waiting area will undergo expansion.

"In the last five years, Blue Grass Airport has experienced over 20 percent passenger growth," said Eric Frankl, executive director. "To accommodate this growth, a comprehensive parking project is underway to ensure we are providing parking in the most popular locations. Long-term parking continues to be a preference for many of our customers, and therefore, it is the primary point of emphasis for this project."

In addition to expanding long-term parking, Blue Grass Airport will provide customers in this lot with a covered walkway that offers protection during inclement weather. The airport will also be expanding its cell phone waiting area by building a 40-space lot where drivers can wait to meet arriving passengers. Future plans also include adding an observation/picnic area in the cell phone waiting lot for families to watch airplanes landing and taking off. This lot will not only minimize curbside congestion, but it will also provide a great view of the airfield for aviation enthusiasts who enjoy spending time in an airport environment.

Construction for this project is already underway and all parking areas are expected to be completed by spring 2020. Project partners include engineering firm HDR, Inc. and general contractor The Allen Company. As part of this project, the airport will be installing LED lighting throughout the parking lot and incorporating new landscaping reflective of the Bluegrass region.

Effective May 1, 2019, Blue Grass Airport will be designating multiple curbside spaces near baggage claim for Ride App Pick-Up services, which include Lyft and Uber customers. These spaces will eliminate the need for Ride App drivers to determine a mutually agreed upon pick-up location with their customers. Signage will be placed both inside and outside the terminal so passengers can easily identify this new curbside location.

"We appreciate our passengers' patience during the construction process," added Frankl. "Throughout this project, the airport team will continue to focus on providing the convenient and quick experience that passengers have become accustomed to when traveling to/from Blue Grass Airport. With parking just steps from the terminal, short security screening lines and fewer crowds, passengers will continue to enjoy the benefits that come with an airport the size of LEX."

Located in Lexington, Kentucky, Blue Grass Airport offers non-stop and connecting service to hundreds of destinations worldwide. The airport serves more than 1.3 million passengers annually and supports our community with an economic output exceeding $370 million.
